US President Donald Trump reiterated his support for the H-1B visa program, emphasizing the importance of attracting skilled immigrants to boost the country’s economy. Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump highlighted the critical role of the H-1B visa in bringing “competent” and “great” individuals to the US, which he believes is essential for economic growth.
Trump explained that allowing high-quality individuals into the US helps support various industries and strengthens businesses. “You’ve got to get the best people… We need quality people coming in,” he said. “By doing that, we’re expanding businesses, and that takes care of everybody.”
The H-1B visa program, which permits US employers to hire nonimmigrant workers for specialty occupations, covers a wide array of roles. Trump noted that the program not only benefits engineers but also a diverse range of workers, including maitre d’s, wine experts, and top-tier waiters, who contribute to business growth and success.
“I like very competent people coming into our country, even if that involves them training and helping others who may not have the qualifications they do,” Trump added. “I’m not just talking about engineers. I’m talking about people at all levels.” He reaffirmed his belief in the importance of bringing “competent people” to the US and stated that he was very familiar with the H-1B program, having used it for his own properties.
Trump’s comments align with his administration’s ongoing focus on attracting global talent to fill critical positions in various industries. He believes that these skilled immigrants not only meet immediate labor demands but also drive business expansion, benefiting the broader workforce.
Earlier in December, Trump also expressed his continued support for the H-1B visa program, describing it as a “great program.” However, it is worth noting that during his first term, Trump’s administration implemented restrictions on the program, citing concerns over “abuse” and the potential economic strain of foreign workers displacing American employees.
In 2016, Trump criticized the H-1B program, claiming that it allowed companies to replace American workers with lower-paid foreign labor. The restrictions were further tightened in 2020, largely due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
