The strategic and economic partnership between India and the United States continues to grow, driven by shared democratic values and mutual interests in global stability, technological innovation, and economic collaboration.
David Smith, Executive Chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, one of the largest broadcast and technology companies in the United States, shared his perspective on the evolving India-US relationship and the role of media in shaping public understanding. Smith emphasized the increasing alignment between the two nations, underscoring their expanding cooperation in various sectors.
“There is great respect between the two nations, and a shared vision for broad cooperation,” Smith said in an interview with ANI. “The US-India relationship has strengthened significantly, driven by common goals in economic growth, security, technology, and a rules-based international order.”
Smith pointed out that economic engagement remains a cornerstone of the partnership, with the US seeing India as a key player in global supply chains, digital innovation, and advanced manufacturing. “Trade and investment ties continue to grow, and initiatives like the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) showcase deep collaboration in areas like semiconductors, AI, and defence,” he said. India’s role in these fields further positions it as a key player in the global technological landscape.
Beyond economics, Smith highlighted India’s increasing geopolitical importance. “Both countries share a commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. India plays a stabilizing role in the region, and the Quad partnership strengthens this alignment,” he noted. Additionally, defense agreements such as COMCASA and BECA, along with joint military exercises, are fostering deeper security cooperation between Washington and New Delhi.
Smith also emphasized the importance of people-to-people connections in enhancing bilateral ties, particularly through the Indian-American community’s contributions in entrepreneurship, academia, and public service. “The Indian-American community is vital in strengthening the relationship by fostering mutual understanding and collaboration,” he added.
Sinclair’s own involvement in India reflects this broader trend, as Smith described the company’s experiences in the country. “Our journey with India reflects the immense opportunities between the two nations,” he said, noting Sinclair’s active engagement in India’s media and technology sectors.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for talks with President Donald Trump during his visit to the US, Smith believes the discussions will focus on expanding collaboration in trade, defense, and energy security. “Both leaders recognize the immense potential of the US-India partnership, which will continue to shape the global order in the 21st century,” he said.
Smith also emphasized the critical role of media in shaping public perceptions of the India-US relationship. As the head of Sinclair, the second-largest television broadcaster in the US, he highlighted the company’s role in informing American audiences about key developments in trade, defense, and diplomacy. “At Sinclair, we ensure that the strength of the US-India alliance is accurately conveyed, from trade agreements to joint military exercises and advancements in technology,” he explained.
In addition to its reporting, Sinclair has made significant investments in India’s media and technology sectors. “We’ve invested tens of millions of dollars in India, forming partnerships with major companies in broadcasting, telecommunications, and digital platforms,” Smith said. These investments reflect the growing business ties between the two countries, particularly in digital infrastructure and content distribution.
Sinclair has also partnered with Indian media organizations to bring Indian perspectives to American audiences. “Through partnerships with organizations like Asian News International (ANI) and programs like My India, we provide American viewers with direct access to Indian viewpoints, empowering them with insights into India’s role in global affairs,” Smith noted.
Ultimately, Smith sees media as a powerful tool in strengthening the US-India relationship. “The media’s role is not just to report but to educate, promote balanced discourse, and dispel misinformation. Sinclair is committed to fostering transparency and mutual understanding between the two countries,” he concluded.
