UK authorities are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out at Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s private residence in north London early Monday morning. The London Fire Brigade responded to the emergency at around 1:11 a.m., swiftly bringing the blaze under control.
While no injuries were reported, the front door of the property was damaged, and a police cordon remains in place as officers continue their investigation. A resident of the area described hearing a loud bang, comparing it to a “firebomb,” and suggested that glass may have shattered in the incident.
According to Politico, counterterrorism officers are now involved, and the fire is being treated as suspicious.
Although Starmer officially resides at 10 Downing Street, he continues to retain his Kentish Town home, where the incident occurred.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson confirmed that two fire engines were dispatched from the local station:
“Firefighters were called to a small fire outside a property in Kentish Town in the early hours of Monday.”
The Metropolitan Police said they were alerted by the fire brigade shortly after the incident began.
“On Monday, 12 May at 1:35 a.m., police were alerted by the London Fire Brigade to reports of a fire at a residential address,” a police spokesperson said.
In a brief statement, Downing Street said that Prime Minister Starmer is thankful to emergency services for their swift response, but noted that no further comment can be made due to the ongoing investigation.
