In a bold inaugural address on Monday, Donald Trump, after being sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, declared his intention to take back control of the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of unfair practices and suggesting that China is exerting influence over the strategic waterway.

Speaking at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, Trump said, “The United States spent more money than ever on a project and lost 38 lives in the building of the Panama Canal. We have been treated very badly from this foolish gift that should never have been made. Panama’s promise to us has been broken.”

The Panama Canal, completed in 1914 largely through US efforts, was controlled by the United States until 1999, when it was fully handed over to Panama after decades of joint administration. Trump criticized the handover, calling it a mistake and stating that excessive fees charged by Panama are unfair to the US.

In November, following his presidential election victory, Trump expressed his grievances on his Truth Social platform, writing, “Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous.”

Trump also raised concerns about China’s growing influence in the region. “China is operating the Panama Canal,” he claimed, adding, “we’re taking it back.” The canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and is one of the busiest and most strategically important waterways in the world.

In another controversial announcement, Trump revealed plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico, stating, “A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth — inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world.”

Trump’s inaugural address outlined his vision for reasserting American dominance on the global stage while reversing policies and agreements he considers detrimental to the US. The oath of office was administered by US Chief Justice John Roberts during the 60th Presidential Inauguration.

With sweeping promises and bold declarations, Trump began his presidency with a commitment to reshaping America’s global standing and reclaiming what he views as lost opportunities and influence.
