US President Donald Trump described his phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “productive,” announcing that both leaders have agreed to an immediate ceasefire on all energy and infrastructure amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump shared details of the call on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that peace negotiations are now in motion and emphasizing that the war should have never started in the first place.
“My phone conversation today with President Putin of Russia was a very good and productive one. We agreed to an immediate ceasefire on all energy and infrastructure, with an understanding that we will work quickly toward a complete ceasefire and, ultimately, an end to this horrible war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump posted.
He also revealed that discussions touched upon a broader peace agreement, with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressing a desire to end the war.
The White House Press Secretary later released an official statement confirming the ceasefire discussions, stating that both Trump and Putin emphasized the importance of lasting peace and the need to redirect war resources to benefit their respective nations.
“Both leaders agreed that the blood and treasure spent on this war would be better used to serve their people’s needs. They also stressed that improved U.S.-Russia relations could bring significant benefits once peace is achieved,” the statement read.
Beyond the Ukraine conflict, the leaders also discussed implementing a ceasefire in the Black Sea, a key region for Russian wheat exports. According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Russia exports between 2.0 to 4.5 million tons of wheat via sea each month, with primary markets including Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Algeria.
Additionally, Trump and Putin addressed broader regional stability in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to prevent future conflicts and curb the proliferation of strategic weapons. They reportedly agreed that Iran must not be in a position to threaten Israel’s security.
Reports from ABC News indicate that the Trump administration is actively negotiating a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, with Ukraine agreeing to a temporary halt in fighting—provided that Russia also complies.
As diplomatic efforts gain momentum, the agreement marks a significant step toward ending the war, with both leaders committed to achieving a lasting peace settlement.
