US President Donald Trump on Friday announced the appointment of Sergio Gor as the next US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Gor’s service as Director of Presidential Personnel, noting his role in filling more than 95% of federal government positions with “America First Patriots.” Gor will continue in his White House role until his Senate confirmation.
“Sergio is a great friend who has been at my side for many years. He worked on my campaigns, published my best-selling books, and led one of the biggest Super PACs supporting our movement. For the most populous region in the world, I need someone I can fully trust. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador,” Trump wrote.
Gor succeeds Eric Garcetti, who served as US Ambassador to India from May 11, 2023, to January 20, 2025. Following Garcetti’s departure, Jorgan K. Andrews has been serving as interim Charge d’Affaires at the US Embassy in New Delhi. Prior to Garcetti, Kenneth Juster held the position between 2017 and 2021.
Garcetti, in his final weeks in office, highlighted the “historic progress” achieved in US–India relations, emphasizing cooperation on global prosperity, climate action, and peace.
Gor’s appointment comes at a sensitive moment in bilateral ties, with New Delhi grappling with steep US-imposed trade tariffs, including a 25% levy on Russian oil imports.
