In a high-profile and publicized event on the South Lawn of the White House, US President Donald Trump purchased a red Tesla from the company’s CEO and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Head, Elon Musk. The event took place in front of a lineup of gleaming Tesla vehicles, including the much-discussed Cybertruck.
Trump made his remarks alongside Musk and his son X shortly after announcing his intention to buy a Tesla on social media in support of the tech entrepreneur. The President climbed into a red Model X, admiring it with the comment, “That’s beautiful,” before confirming that this was his choice. Musk also showcased the Cybertruck to Trump, pointing out its bulletproof features.
During the event, Trump praised Musk, calling him a “great guy” and a “patriot.” “When I saw what was happening, I said that I want to buy a Tesla and we just went to the front. He (DOGE Head and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk) had four beautiful cars there, and I bought one in front of the press. It was a very public purchase, and they’re beautiful and do a great job,” Trump said.
The President’s show of support comes amid a downturn in Tesla’s stock following the US Election Day. Musk’s increasing political involvement and his efforts to slash the federal government have sparked both backlash and support. Following Trump’s public purchase, Tesla’s stock saw an uptick.
Trump also addressed recent incidents of vandalism targeting Tesla showrooms, charging stations, and vehicles across the country. He vowed to classify any violence against Tesla dealerships as domestic terrorism. “I think (Musk has) been treated very unfairly by a very small group of people, and I just want people to know that he can’t be penalized for being a patriot,” Trump said.
When asked about the possibility of labeling violent protesters as domestic terrorists, Trump confirmed his stance. “I will do that, I’ll do it. I’m going to stop them,” he asserted.
Despite his purchase, Trump clarified that he will not be driving the Tesla due to security restrictions, but White House staff will have access to the vehicle. Notably, Trump insisted on paying full price for the car, rejecting any potential discounts to avoid perceptions of favoritism. “(Musk) would give me a discount, but if I do a discount, they’re gonna say, ‘Oh, I got benefits,’” Trump explained.
The event highlighted the strong alliance between Trump and Musk and marked a rare moment where politics, business, and high-profile personalities intersected in a very public way.
