As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump, the spotlight falls on the areas of cooperation and potential challenges between the two nations. The anticipated discussions are expected to further strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in trade, defense, and emerging technologies.
David Smith, Executive Chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, expressed his admiration for Modi’s leadership and his innovative use of technology to drive governance. “I have followed Prime Minister Modi’s journey closely and have been fascinated by how he has utilized technology to communicate and drive change, particularly through his Mann Ki Baat Radio Program. His vision for leveraging technology to foster societal development in the world’s largest democracy is truly inspiring,” Smith said in an interview with ANI.
Smith also highlighted Sinclair’s significant role in India’s broadcasting and communications sector, noting the company’s decade-long efforts to enhance India’s ability to reach its vast population. “Sinclair has been deeply involved in developing broadcasting and communications solutions in India, one major breakthrough being our Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology, which provides free-to-air mobile broadcasting for news, education, and emergency alerts,” he explained.
The D2M technology, which was developed through a Public-Private Partnership, has the potential to transform media accessibility and bridge the digital divide. Smith emphasized its significance: “D2M, a collaboration between Sinclair, IIT Kanpur-incubated Free Stream Technologies, Prasar Bharati, and Saankhya Labs (now part of Tejas Networks, a TATA company), has expanded digital connectivity and media access for India’s population.”
Beyond media, Smith discussed the broader scope of US-India cooperation, particularly in technology, defense, and trade. “The collaboration between the US and India spans essential sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, next-gen telecommunications, and defense. The two countries are also enhancing supply chain resilience and deepening strategic trust through agreements in defense and intelligence-sharing,” he noted.
However, Smith acknowledged that challenges remain in certain areas. “While the relationship is strong, there are ongoing challenges, particularly in trade negotiations, regulatory policies, and spectrum allocation for emerging technologies. Tensions may arise, but both leaders recognize the critical importance of maintaining a robust and long-term partnership.”
Looking ahead, Smith sees Modi’s visit as a pivotal moment to reaffirm commitments and define new goals for future collaboration. “Prime Minister Modi’s visit offers a chance to solidify cooperation, set clear objectives for technological and economic progress, and chart a path forward for deeper US-India ties. This relationship is rooted in innovation, shared values, and a mutual vision for global leadership,” he said.
