Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, leading an all-party parliamentary delegation, met with Dana Castaneda, President of Panama’s National Assembly, during an official visit aimed at bolstering India’s diplomatic efforts against global terrorism. The meeting took place on Tuesday (local time) at Panama’s National Assembly, where the delegation engaged with a select group of Panamanian lawmakers.
The visit to Panama follows the delegation’s earlier stop in Guyana and is part of a broader initiative by the Indian government to highlight Pakistan’s links to terrorism and to showcase India’s firm stance following Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
During their three-day stay in Panama City, the delegation will meet with government officials, members of the media, strategic experts, the Indian diaspora, and other key figures. According to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Panama, the visit aims to emphasize India’s message of unity, brotherhood, and its unyielding opposition to terrorism in all forms.
“The delegation will be interacting with Panamanian leadership and key interlocutors from media, strategic community, Indian community and diaspora, and friends of India in Panama, underlining our strong message of unity and brotherhood as well as India’s collective resolve to fight against the scourge of terrorism,” the Embassy noted in a post on X.
The delegation, led by Tharoor, includes MPs Sarfaraz Ahmed, G M Harish Balayogi, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejasvi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Mallikarjun Devda, Milind Deora, and former Indian Ambassador to the U.S., Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
The Embassy welcomed the delegation upon their arrival, stating, “Ambassador received and welcomed the All Party Parliamentary Delegation led by Shashi Tharoor at the airport. The delegation is in Panama to convey India’s strong message of zero-tolerance for terrorism.”
Earlier, Taranjit Singh Sandhu described their prior visit to Guyana as “fruitful and productive,” noting that President Mohamed Irfaan Ali reiterated Guyana’s support for India and interest in expanding economic ties.
This diplomatic outreach is part of a broader global initiative launched by New Delhi, involving seven multi-party delegations, each tasked with presenting India’s post-Operation Sindoor position to international stakeholders and countering misinformation about the country’s counterterrorism policies.
