Russia has strongly criticised the United States’ growing use of sanctions and tariff barriers, calling Washington’s policies a form of “politically motivated economic pressure” that undermines global sovereignty and the principles of free trade.
Responding to a media query on the US Administration’s tightening of tariffs, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the measures, describing them as part of a “neocolonial agenda” targeting nations that choose to follow an independent foreign policy.
“Sanctions and restrictions have unfortunately become a defining feature of the current historical period, impacting countries across the globe,” Zakharova said. “Unable to accept the erosion of its dominance in an emerging multipolar international order, Washington continues to pursue a neocolonial agenda, employing politically motivated economic pressure against those who choose an independent course on the international stage.”
She noted that such protectionist policies directly contradict the principles of free trade once promoted by the West. Highlighting Brazil as a key example, Zakharova said US actions were a violation of national sovereignty and an attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
“This policy risks slowing global economic growth, disrupting supply chains, and deepening fragmentation of the international economic system,” she warned.
Reaffirming Russia’s commitment to building a multipolar world, Zakharova added, “We firmly believe that no tariff wars or sanctions can halt the natural course of history. We are supported by many partners and allies—particularly in the Global South and within BRICS—who share this vision.”
She concluded by emphasising Russia’s readiness to deepen cooperation with like-minded nations to resist “unlawful unilateral sanctions” and to work toward a just and equitable international order.
Meanwhile, the remarks come amid renewed criticism from former US President Donald Trump, who on Monday accused India of profiting from the resale of Russian oil and vowed to increase tariffs on Indian imports.
“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then… selling it on the Open Market for big profits,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.”
India has strongly defended its energy trade with Russia, asserting its sovereign right to shape its own energy policy. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected Western criticism as “unjustified and unreasonable.”
India’s oil imports, the MEA said, are guided by the goal of securing affordable and predictable energy supplies for its population. The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting national interests and economic security amid rising global pressure.
