Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani played a crucial role in securing Iran’s approval for a US-proposed ceasefire with Israel, following a direct request from US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, PM Al Thani held a key phone call with Iranian officials on Monday, during which Tehran agreed to the ceasefire plan. The call followed a conversation between President Trump and Qatar’s Emir, during which Trump informed the Emir that Israel had accepted the ceasefire terms and urged Doha to persuade Iran to do the same.
The breakthrough came just hours after Iran launched missile strikes on US military bases in Qatar and Iraq, including the Al Udeid Air Base—the largest American installation in the region.
Following the agreement, Trump took to Truth Social to announce a “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran, declaring it would take effect in approximately six hours.
“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE… for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!” Trump wrote.
He explained that Iran would initiate the ceasefire first, with Israel following 12 hours later. “Upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World,” Trump said, urging both nations to remain “peaceful and respectful.”
Trump praised the diplomatic effort and lauded both countries for their willingness to de-escalate. “This is a war that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East—but it didn’t, and never will!” he wrote, closing with: “God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”
The conflict began on June 13 with Israel’s large-scale airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities under “Operation Rising Lion.” In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched “Operation True Promise 3,” targeting Israeli military infrastructure. The US later intervened with strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, prompting Iran’s retaliatory attacks on US bases.
The ceasefire, facilitated by Qatar’s diplomatic intervention, marks a significant moment in the effort to prevent further regional escalation and restore stability in the Middle East.
