Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Canada earlier this week for the G7 Summit, highlighted India’s rich artisanal legacy through a curated selection of handcrafted gifts presented to top Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Among the standout gifts was a brass Bodhi Tree sculpture from Bihar, symbolizing enlightenment and peace, gifted to PM Carney. Handcrafted by skilled artisans, the sculpture represents the sacred tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. With its finely detailed leaves and traditional metalwork, it reflects Bihar’s deep-rooted spiritual and artistic traditions.

To the Governor General of Canada, PM Modi presented a silver filigree clutch purse from Cuttack, Odisha, an exquisite example of the centuries-old Tarakasi craft. The clutch features delicate floral and geometric motifs created using ultra-fine twisted silver wires. Functional yet elegant, it carries the charm of royal Mughal and temple-inspired art forms.

The Premier of Alberta received a stunning ebony wood jali-work box from Rajasthan, adorned with silver nakkashi inlay and a hand-painted peacock on the lid. This fusion of wood carving and silver artistry, known for its meticulous craftsmanship, celebrates India’s royal heritage and natural beauty.

In addition, PM Modi gifted a papier-mâché box with gold leaf work from Jammu and Kashmir to the Lt. Governor General of Alberta. Crafted using the sakhtsazi (paper molding) and naqashi (decorative painting) techniques, the vibrant box features traditional motifs of Chinar leaves, flowers, and birds. Each piece reflects the elegance and charm of Kashmir’s living art tradition.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that the exchange of these artisanal gifts served as a cultural bridge, celebrating India’s enduring craftsmanship.

On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, PM Modi met Canadian PM Carney in what was their first in-person meeting following Canada’s recent general elections. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening India-Canada ties and agreed to take constructive steps to restore stability and cooperation in bilateral relations.
