Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Russia for the May 9 parade in Moscow’s Red Square, marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, according to a report by Russian news agency TASS. A military source cited by TASS indicated that the visit has a “high probability” and that Modi’s participation in the parade is highly likely.
The military source also mentioned that discussions are underway regarding the involvement of a ceremonial unit of the Indian armed forces, which would need to arrive at least a month before the event for rehearsals.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that many invited countries had already confirmed their attendance, with foreign leaders from various nations expected to participate. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the Russian side would be pleased to welcome foreign guests who recognize the significance of Victory Day.
This visit holds added significance amid ongoing discussions between U.S. and Russian officials regarding the war in Ukraine, with Modi having previously advocated for peace in his talks with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Prime Minister Modi had last visited Russia in October 2024 for the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan.
