Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with former Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, on Wednesday for “wonderful” discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between India and Mauritius across various sectors. PM Modi shared his satisfaction with the meeting in a post on X, stating, “Had a good meeting with former Prime Minister of Mauritius, Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.”
In addition to his meeting with Jugnauth, PM Modi also engaged in fruitful deliberations with Georges Pierre Lesjongard, MP and Leader of the Opposition of Mauritius, aiming to further strengthen the longstanding India-Mauritius friendship.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi extended his greetings to the people of Mauritius on their National Day, expressing his eagerness to be part of the celebrations. He also shared highlights of his visit so far, including a grand welcome and his earlier meeting with Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
On Tuesday, PM Modi met with Mauritius’ Prime Minister Ramgoolam to review the nations’ bilateral ties and explore new avenues to deepen their “special bond.” During the discussions, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment as a “valued and trusted development partner” for Mauritius, emphasizing the shared goal of advancing the interests of the Global South.
PM Modi also attended a banquet hosted by PM Ramgoolam, where he praised the enduring relationship between the two countries and reiterated their joint efforts for regional peace and security. He also recalled proposing the SAGAR vision during his previous visit to Mauritius, emphasizing Mauritius’ significance as India’s “close maritime neighbour” and “important partner” in the Indian Ocean.
In a historic moment, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam awarded PM Modi the prestigious “Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean” – the highest honor from Mauritius. This makes PM Modi the first Indian to receive this recognition, marking the 21st international award he has received from a country.
PM Modi also met with the President of Mauritius, Dharambeer Gokhool, at the State House on Tuesday, where he presented OCI cards to both the President and the First Lady, Brinda Gokhool, in a special gesture of goodwill.
