Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a ceremonial banquet hosted in his honour by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in Malé, reaffirmed the deep-rooted cultural and civilisational ties between India and the Maldives, calling the relationship “centuries old” and built on mutual trust and friendship.
PM Modi said the Maldives holds a “special place” in India’s Neighbourhood First policy, stating, “This is not just diplomacy but a relation of deep affinity.” He described India and Maldives as neighbours, partners, and “true friends who stand together in times of need.”
The visit came at a momentous time, marking both the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence and 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Modi expressed his gratitude for being invited as the Guest of Honour during such a significant milestone, calling the occasion “an honour.”
Reflecting on the historical and cultural bonds, Modi said, “Our shared heritage is as old as the monsoon and as sweet as Addu Bondi,” noting similarities in language, cuisine, and tradition. He emphasized the strong people-to-people connections, highlighting that the 1 millionth tourist to the Maldives this year was an Indian citizen.
President Muizzu, in his address, congratulated Modi for becoming the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of India in consecutive terms, with 4,078 days in office — surpassing former PM Indira Gandhi. He praised Modi’s leadership and dedication to the progress of the Indian people.
Narendra Modi is notably the first post-independence-born Prime Minister of India and the longest-serving non-Congress leader in the role. He took office on May 26, 2014, and has served over 11 years to date.
During the visit, Modi and Muizzu held a bilateral meeting, signing several agreements to enhance cooperation in trade, health, agriculture, and social welfare, further strengthening the bilateral partnership.
The banquet underscored the warmth and continuity in India-Maldives relations, rooted in history yet focused on a shared and progressive future.
