Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held delegation-level bilateral talks with his Fijian counterpart Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, marking a significant step toward advancing India-Fiji relations.
PM Rabuka, who began his first official visit to India as Fiji’s prime minister on Sunday, will remain in the country until August 26. On his arrival, he was welcomed by Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the Northeastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar.
Ahead of the talks, Rabuka paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared images of the homage on X, describing him as an “important Global South and FIPIC partner.”
The visit is aimed at enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors, including strategic engagement, healthcare, and people-to-people ties. Prime Minister Modi is also hosting a luncheon in Rabuka’s honour.
On Sunday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda met the visiting leader as part of the BJP’s ‘Know BJP’ initiative. Their discussions included strengthening party-to-party ties and boosting cooperation in the healthcare sector. Rabuka was accompanied by Fiji’s Minister of Health and Medical Services, Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, along with senior officials.
The ongoing visit highlights India’s growing outreach to Pacific Island nations and underscores the shared commitment of both countries to deepen their partnership for mutual growth and development.
