Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Singapore’s newly elected Prime Minister Lawrence Wong following the decisive victory of the People’s Action Party (PAP) in the island nation’s general elections. Wong, who led the ruling party to its 14th consecutive term in office, will now oversee the continuation of Singapore’s political stability and economic progress.
In a message shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi commended Wong on the PAP’s resounding mandate and reaffirmed India’s commitment to bolstering the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two nations. “Heartiest congratulations @LawrenceWongST on your resounding victory in the general elections. India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties. I look forward to continue working closely with you to further advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” Modi wrote.
Singapore’s ruling PAP, in power since 1959, made notable gains in this election compared to 2020. The party secured 87 of the 97 contested parliamentary seats and increased its vote share to 65.6%, up from 61.2% in the previous general election. The result cements the party’s grip on Singapore’s political landscape and positions Wong as a key leader in Southeast Asia.
Following the election, PM Wong expressed deep gratitude to the citizens of Singapore for their overwhelming support. “Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team,” he posted.
Emphasizing unity and inclusivity, Wong added in a follow-up message, “Let’s stand as One Team Singapore—to confront the storms ahead together and secure a brighter future for all of us. We will involve Singaporeans in this journey to shape our future. We will engage and listen—because every voice is important.”
Wong also praised the opposition, particularly the Workers’ Party, for their strong electoral campaign. He acknowledged their role in a healthy democratic process and assured that the government would take their perspectives seriously. “The Opposition, in particular the Workers’ Party, fielded a strong slate of candidates and gave us a tough fight. I respect the Opposition’s presence in Parliament and will continue to take their views and suggestions seriously. Ultimately, the bigger contest is not between political parties, but between Singapore and the challenges facing us,” Wong said.
Wong, who was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2011, has held a range of ministerial roles, including in the Ministries of Culture, National Development, and Education. He was also Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and played a critical leadership role as co-chair of the Multi-Ministry Taskforce managing Singapore’s COVID-19 response.
India and Singapore enjoy strong economic, strategic, and cultural ties. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries encompasses trade, defense cooperation, innovation, and digital collaboration. With both leaders reiterating their commitment to deepening this relationship, the coming years are likely to witness greater bilateral engagement and joint initiatives across various sectors.
