Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a landmark visit to Cyprus, marking a new chapter in India-Cyprus relations with a strong emphasis on deepening strategic, cultural, and economic cooperation.
In a symbolic gesture of friendship and respect, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides conferred upon PM Modi the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’, the nation’s highest civilian honour. The award recognises Modi’s pivotal role in strengthening bilateral ties and ushering in a new era of partnership.
Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude on social media, writing: “I thank President Christodoulides for showing me parts of the historic city of Nicosia. We look forward to closer people-to-people relations with Cyprus!”
The visit—Modi’s first to Cyprus and the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over two decades—resulted in a comprehensive five-year action plan that aims to expand cooperation in key sectors including defense, cybersecurity, renewable energy, healthcare, trade, and cultural exchange.
In their wide-ranging talks, Modi and Christodoulides reaffirmed the strategic alignment of both nations. The two leaders discussed regional and global challenges, underscoring their shared vision for peace, prosperity, and stability. The Joint Declaration released after the meeting described the India-Cyprus partnership as that of “trusted and indispensable partners.”

- Trade & Technology: Renewed efforts to finalize the India-EU Free Trade Agreement by 2025, with a focus on fintech and digital services.

- Cultural Ties: Promotion of yoga, Ayurveda, and tourism between the two nations.
- Economic Linkages: Strategic collaboration between the National Stock Exchange of India and the Cyprus Stock Exchange in Gujarat’s GIFT City.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hailed the visit, stating, “The conferment of the Grand Cross is a testimony to PM Modi’s personal contribution. A successful visit that heralds a new era in our longstanding ties.”
The leaders also emphasized the importance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, viewing it as a key driver of economic connectivity and geopolitical stability across regions.
Accompanied by President Christodoulides, PM Modi took a guided walk through the cultural heart of Nicosia, highlighting shared civilizational values and mutual admiration.
Describing the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted, “Nicosia stands resilient, reflective of the indomitable spirit of the proud people of Cyprus.”
