Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his historic visit to Trinidad and Tobago, paid tribute to the enduring cultural and spiritual connections between India and the Caribbean nation by presenting a replica of the Ram Mandir and holy water from the Sarayu River to the Indian diaspora in Port of Spain.
Addressing a vibrant community gathering, PM Modi recalled the strong devotional ties shared by the diaspora with Lord Ram and Ayodhya. “I am aware of your deep faith in Prabhu Shri Ram. You had earlier sent sacred water and ‘shilas’ for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. It is my honour to bring with me a replica of the Ram Mandir and holy water from the Sarayu, with the same devotion,” he said.
He also reminisced about his earlier visit to Trinidad and Tobago over two decades ago, noting how much the bilateral bond had deepened. “Our ties go far beyond geography and generations. Streets here bear names like Banaras, Patna, and Delhi. Festivals such as Navaratri, Mahashivratri, and Janmashtami are celebrated with spirit and pride. The traditions of Chautal and Bhaitak Gana still thrive,” he observed.
PM Modi lauded the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago for preserving their cultural heritage despite facing immense hardships. “They left the Ganga and Yamuna behind but carried the Ramayana in their hearts. They weren’t just migrants—they were messengers of a timeless civilisation,” he said, calling the diaspora “our pride” and “Rashtradoots—ambassadors of India’s values, culture, and heritage.”
Highlighting ancestral roots, he noted that many Indo-Trinidadians trace their lineage to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. “Prime Minister Kamla ji’s ancestors lived in Buxar, Bihar, and she is rightfully called ‘Bihar ki Beti’. Bihar’s heritage—be it in democracy, education, or diplomacy—has inspired the world for centuries and continues to do so,” he added.
Welcoming PM Modi, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar described his visit as a “profound honour,” stating, “We are graced by one of the world’s most respected and admired visionary leaders. PM Modi, your leadership has transformed India and positioned it as a dominant force on the global stage. Your presence is a source of immense pride, especially for the Indo-Trinidadian community whose roots are deeply entwined with yours.”
PM Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago in 26 years and comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar. It marks a renewed commitment to strengthening political, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
