In a gesture of environmental solidarity and cultural connection, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam jointly planted a sapling at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Mauritius on Tuesday. This event was part of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, a campaign launched by PM Modi in June 2024 to promote environmental responsibility while paying tribute to mothers.
The leaders planted an Aegle Marmelos tree, commonly known as the Wood Apple or Bael tree — a plant revered for its cultural and medicinal significance. This marks PM Modi’s second international participation in this initiative, having previously planted a sapling in Guyana.
Thanks to the campaign’s growing influence, over 1 billion trees have already been planted in India, with its impact spreading worldwide. So far, more than 27,500 trees have been planted across 136 countries, reflecting the initiative’s global reach and success.
During his state visit to Mauritius, PM Modi highlighted the cultural bonds between the two nations. In a post on X, he praised the vibrant presence of the Bhojpuri language and traditions in Mauritius, noting the captivating Geet-Gawai performance as a symbol of their shared heritage.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Mauritius was met with a warm reception. Upon arrival, PM Modi was greeted by PM Ramgoolam and other dignitaries at the airport, followed by a ceremonial welcome and enthusiastic support from the Indian community in Mauritius. Later in the day, PM Modi was scheduled to meet the President of Mauritius, Anerood Jugnauth, and address the Indian diaspora.
This collaborative tree-planting symbolizes a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and cultural unity between India and Mauritius, strengthening the historic ties between the two nations.
