Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam announced on Wednesday that he and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to a “Joint Vision Document for an Enhanced Strategic Partnership,” aiming to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two nations.

At a joint press conference, Ramgoolam shared that the discussions between the two leaders were constructive, focusing on advancing their cooperation in key sectors. “Our shared vision is to increase our cooperation in existing and emerging sectors such as space research, AI, digital health, ocean economy, pharmaceuticals, ICT, FinTech, and cybersecurity,” he stated.

Ramgoolam also expressed his honor at PM Modi’s presence during Mauritius’ National Day celebrations, highlighting it as a symbol of the unique and deep relations the two countries share. “PM Modi has honored us with his presence on the 57th anniversary of our independence. His distinguished presence is a testimony to the special bond that binds our nations,” he remarked.

Prime Minister Modi, who was invited as the Chief Guest for the National Day celebrations, confirmed India’s commitment to furthering the strategic partnership. “Today, Prime Minister Ramgoolam and I decided to elevate our partnership to an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership,'” he said. Modi also confirmed India’s support in building a new Parliament House for Mauritius, a gesture he described as “a gift from the Mother of Democracy.”

During his speech, PM Modi expressed India’s gratitude for the strong ties with Mauritius, describing both countries as partners in economic and social progress. “On behalf of 140 crore Indians, I congratulate the people of Mauritius on their National Day. India and Mauritius are not only connected by the Indian Ocean but also by shared culture and values,” Modi stated.

He further highlighted Mauritius’ importance in India’s broader regional strategy. Recalling his 2015 visit, which laid the foundation for the SAGAR vision (“Security and Growth for All in the Region”), Modi expanded the initiative into “MAHASAGAR—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.” This updated vision aims to enhance trade, capacity building, and mutual security across the Indian Ocean region, the Global South, and Africa.

The India-Mauritius Joint Vision Document marks a new chapter in the partnership, focusing on regional stability, economic growth, and security cooperation, laying a strong foundation for future collaboration.
