Mauritius Deputy Foreign Minister Hambyrajen Narsinghen announced on Saturday that Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam will visit India in the next two to three months at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement was made during Narsinghen’s visit to Chennai for the World Tamil Diaspora Day celebrations.
Speaking to ANI, Narsinghen shared his experience meeting PM Modi and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar, describing the interactions as fruitful. “I had a great time meeting with the EAM and also had a brief meeting with Prime Minister Modi,” he said.
He confirmed that PM Modi had extended an invitation to his Mauritian counterpart, stating, “In the next two to three months, my Prime Minister will be visiting India.”
Narsinghen highlighted Mauritius’ strategic location in the Indian Ocean and its longstanding relationship with India, particularly Tamil Nadu. He noted the nation’s neutral approach in global affairs, likening it to Switzerland, while emphasizing its strong cultural and economic ties with India.
“Mauritius is located in a very strategic place in the Indian Ocean, where many geopolitical developments are taking place. While Mauritius is small, we maintain a neutral stance, similar to Switzerland. We have strong ties with India and good relations with Tamil Nadu. My presence here is to consolidate and rekindle our special relationship with Tamil Nadu,” he stated.
The Deputy Foreign Minister invited the people of Tamil Nadu to explore business opportunities in Mauritius, highlighting the country’s unique blend of African, Indian, and European cultural influences.
“We are inviting the people of Tamil Nadu to come to Mauritius and explore the business opportunities the country offers. Mauritius is partly African, partly Indian, and has a European mindset. It’s a melting pot of cultures, which is the beauty of Mauritius,” Narsinghen said.
Narsinghen was in Tamil Nadu for the two-day World Tamil Diaspora Day 2025 event, held in Nandambakkam, Chennai. The event was organized by the Tamil Nadu government in collaboration with the global Tamil diaspora, aiming to celebrate the cultural heritage and strengthen connections among Tamil communities worldwide.
