India’s Ambassador to Japan, Sibi George, has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit is set to deliver “a series of important outcomes”, including the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and the release of key outcome documents.
Speaking to ANI, George highlighted that the visit, scheduled for August 29-30, 2025, at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, will provide a roadmap to strengthen bilateral ties for the next decade.
“This visit will cover the entire spectrum of our relationship, giving new momentum for the next 10 years. Very important MoUs will be signed, and crucial outcome documents will be released,” George said.
He recalled that PM Modi had earlier met PM Ishiba on the sidelines of the Laos Summit and the G7 Summit in Canada, but this will be their first bilateral annual summit since Ishiba took office.
George stressed that India and Japan share a strong foundation built on political, economic, and people-to-people ties. “Every corner of Japan has an Indian connect, reflecting the depth of our relationship,” he noted.
Tracing the partnership back to 2014, when PM Modi and then-Japanese PM Shinzo Abe signed an agreement establishing a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, George said the relationship has since expanded significantly at bilateral, plurilateral, and multilateral levels.
The envoy added that the summit will also serve as a stock-taking exercise. “This is the time to review the progress made and outline a roadmap to elevate ties to the next level over the coming decade,” he said.
The talks are expected to include discussions on the Quad grouping—comprising India, Japan, Australia, and the US—amid growing geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific. George emphasised that Quad remains a crucial platform with a “concrete, positive agenda for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond.”
