Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Lead Indian Delegation to 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brazil

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead an Indian Parliamentary Delegation (IPD) to the Eleventh BRICS Parliamentary Forum, scheduled to take place in Brasília, Brazil from June 3 to 5, according to an official statement.

The high-level delegation will include Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha; Members of Parliament Surendra Singh Nagar, Vijay Baghel, Vivek Thakur, and Shabari Byreddy; along with Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh and Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Mody.

This year’s forum will be held under the overarching theme “The Role of BRICS Parliaments in Building a More Inclusive and Sustainable Global Governance.” The forum will see participation from Presiding Officers and MPs from the BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa — as well as newly inducted members Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran. Delegates from invited nations including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan will also attend, alongside Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President H.E. Ms. Tulia Ackson.

Speaker Om Birla is scheduled to deliver addresses on two key topics: “Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation for Responsible and Inclusive Artificial Intelligence” and “BRICS Parliaments United for the Reform of the Multilateral Peace and Security Architecture.”

The delegation will take part in various plenary sessions focused on vital global concerns. Sub-themes to be discussed include:

  • BRICS Parliamentary Action in Search of New Paths for Economic Development
  • Towards Stronger and More Durable BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation
  • BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Alliance for Global Health
  • BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue on Climate and Sustainability

At the conclusion of the forum, a Joint Statement will be adopted reflecting the collective outcomes of the discussions. Additionally, Speaker Birla may hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other participating countries to enhance inter-parliamentary relations.

The forum marks an important platform for India to engage in meaningful dialogue on global governance, AI ethics, sustainable development, and multilateral reforms, reaffirming its commitment to shaping a more inclusive and equitable world order.
