In conversation with Bronwen Maddox, Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House, Jaishankar provided a comprehensive overview of India’s strategic approach to international relations.

The discussion highlighted the progress of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with Jaishankar emphasizing its potential to strengthen economic ties and foster mutual growth. He also addressed India’s neighbourhood diplomacy, focusing on the complexities of maintaining balanced relations with neighboring countries, particularly China, and the need for stability and mutual respect amidst shifting regional dynamics.

He reaffirmed India’s commitment to global governance, stressing the importance of working closely with the United States while supporting a multipolar world order.

Jaishankar also addressed concerns around human rights, dismissing much of the criticism as politically motivated and asserting that India’s democratic institutions remain robust, fair, and committed to protecting rights. Looking to the future, he expressed optimism about India’s expanding role in global research, innovation, and enterprise, underlining the country’s dedication to contributing meaningfully to the global economy and knowledge sectors.
