Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has lauded India’s economic trajectory, describing it as “fascinating” and crediting reforms under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for driving strong growth.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Smotrich dismissed recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who had labeled India a “dead economy.” Highlighting India’s resilience and potential, he said, “With a 6 per cent growth rate per year, I think India’s growth will accelerate. The reforms Prime Minister Modi is facilitating for free markets and competition are delivering clear results. I am sure you’re on the right path.”

Trump, in a July 31 post on Truth Social, had criticized India’s trade practices and tariffs while downplaying US economic ties with New Delhi.

Smotrich’s positive remarks come amid official data released on August 29 showing India’s real GDP grew by 7.8 per cent in the April–June quarter of FY 2025–26, up from 6.5 per cent in the same quarter last year.

India, currently the world’s fourth-largest economy, is projected to become the third-largest by 2030 with an estimated GDP of USD 7.3 trillion, driven by structural reforms, strong governance, and global partnerships.
