India and the Maldives enjoy a deep-rooted and enduring relationship, built on centuries of geographic proximity, cultural ties, and mutual cooperation, said G. Balasubramanian, the High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the island nation.
Highlighting the strong historical bond, Balasubramanian said, “India and Maldives have a very strong relationship. We have been historical and geographical neighbours. Our ties go back centuries — during the Indus Valley civilisation, people from Lothal used to travel to Lhaviyani and Noonu Atolls in the northern Maldives.”
He emphasized that this ancient connection has evolved into a robust modern partnership, encompassing political collaboration, developmental assistance, trade, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties.
“Our Prime Minister has reiterated that the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy is vital to India, and the Maldives holds a special place in it,” he added.
The envoy noted that India has played a key role in the Maldives’ development journey through grants, lines of credit, and infrastructure support. Several India-backed projects are expected to be inaugurated or handed over during PM Modi’s visit.
On the upcoming bilateral engagements, Balasubramanian confirmed that high-level meetings between Prime Minister Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu will be held at the Presidential Palace. A series of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are also expected to be signed to strengthen cooperation across sectors.
He added that the Indian community in the Maldives is eagerly looking forward to the visit. “The Indian diaspora is very enthusiastic about receiving our Prime Minister,” he said.
PM Modi is scheduled to attend the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations as the guest of honour on July 26, following the conclusion of formal meetings and agreements.
