In a major step to strengthen consular outreach and serve its growing diaspora, India has announced the opening of eight new Indian Consular Application Centres across the United States, effective from August 1, 2025. The move is aimed at improving access, speed, and availability of consular services for the over 5 million-strong Indian-origin community in the US.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, shared the announcement through a video message posted by the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, describing the expansion as a milestone in enhancing India-US people-to-people ties.

The new centres will be opened in the following cities:

An additional centre is also expected to be opened in Los Angeles soon.

“With the opening of these centres, our capacity to deliver consular services will expand significantly. The services will be faster and more accessible to our vibrant Indian diaspora,” said Ambassador Kwatra.

He also announced that all Indian Consular Application Centres will operate on Saturdays starting August 1, to further enhance service accessibility.

The centres will offer a broad range of streamlined miscellaneous consular services, although some key functions will continue to be handled at the main embassy or consulate offices.

Ambassador Kwatra underlined that people-to-people ties remain at the heart of the India-US partnership, and the consular expansion will complement India’s broader diplomatic presence, especially with new consulates also planned for Boston and Los Angeles, as previously announced by the Prime Minister.

He urged members of the Indian diaspora to regularly check the official Embassy website for updates on service availability and centre openings.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian diaspora in the US includes around 2.07 million NRIs, and is the third-largest Asian ethnic group in the country, playing a vital role in advancing India-US relations.

Earlier this year, the US inaugurated its fifth consulate in India, in Bengaluru, signaling mutual efforts by both nations to expand diplomatic and people-centric engagement.
