India’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval met his Canadian counterpart Nathalie G. Drouin, National Security and Intelligence Adviser of Canada, on September 18 in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed.

The visit was part of the regular bilateral security dialogue and followed up on discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.

Both sides recognized the momentum in rebuilding trust and expanding cooperation at the highest political levels. They held productive discussions on counterterrorism, combating transnational organized crime, intelligence sharing, and strengthening existing security mechanisms. The NSAs also deliberated on priority areas for future cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global developments.

Following these talks, pre-Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) were held on September 19 in New Delhi, led by Secretary (East) P. Kumaran from India and Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison from Canada. The consultations reviewed the state of India-Canada relations, reaffirmed shared democratic values, and highlighted commitments to sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rule of law.

Both sides welcomed progress since June 2025, including the return of High Commissioners to each other’s capitals, and agreed to reactivate bilateral dialogue mechanisms across sectors such as trade, defense, energy, civil nuclear, security, critical minerals, space, science and technology, and agriculture.

To enhance people-to-people linkages and economic cooperation, both countries also agreed to address capacity-related issues at their respective Missions and Consulates. Additionally, Deputy Foreign Minister Morrison met separately with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to further discuss bilateral priorities.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on X, “India & Canada held pre-FOC consultations in New Delhi on Sept 19, led by Secretary (East) P. Kumaran & Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison. Both sides welcomed the return of High Commissioners, reviewed bilateral ties, agreed to reactivate all dialogue mechanisms, & address capacity issues at respective diplomatic missions.”
