Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, leading an all-party parliamentary delegation to Brazil, hailed an “excellent” and “warm” meeting with Brazilian Vice Foreign Minister Maria Laura da Rocha, affirming that Brazil expressed strong support for India’s message on the global fight against terrorism.
“The Vice Foreign Minister and her team were very sympathetic and warm. The atmosphere was tremendously friendly. Our main objective—to convey the importance of global solidarity against terrorism—was clearly understood,” said Tharoor.
The delegation, reflecting India’s political diversity, includes MPs Sarfaraz Ahmad, Ganti Harish Madhur, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Tejasvi Surya, and former Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed enhancing counter-terrorism cooperation, multilateral engagement, and the shared values of democracy. The Indian Embassy in Brazil noted the delegation’s appreciation for Brazil’s understanding of terrorism and its solidarity following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
In another significant engagement, Tharoor and the delegation met Senator Nelsinho Trad, President of the India-Brazil Friendship Front and Chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. Tharoor praised Senator Trad’s clear grasp of India’s position and strong endorsement of India’s stand on terrorism.
“A very positive meeting,” Tharoor said. “We emphasized there can be no equivalence between terrorists and victims. Senator Trad assured us of his and his colleagues’ support in Brazil’s Parliament. His message to us was simple—‘You’ve had a successful visit.’”
Tharoor later posted on X: “Excellent & highly productive meeting with Senator Nelsinho Trad… Deeply appreciate his insightful understanding & strong endorsement of India’s perspective. Such solidarity strengthens the bonds between our democracies.”
The delegation also met Celso Amorim, Chief Diplomatic Advisor to Brazil’s President and a veteran foreign policy leader. Tharoor described the discussion as “full and rewarding,” noting Amorim’s past roles as Brazil’s longest-serving Foreign Minister and former Defence Minister.
JMM MP Sarfaraz Ahmad echoed the sentiment of global solidarity: “Wherever we’ve gone, the response has been positive. We shared how India has suffered from terrorism. The world understands Pakistan’s destabilizing role—no one supports them.”
The Brazil visit is part of a broader diplomatic mission by India following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, aimed at mobilizing global opinion against terrorism. The delegation previously visited Panama, Guyana, and Colombia, and will next head to the United States to continue India’s international outreach.
