Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India and Brazil’s shared commitment to combating terrorism with a “zero tolerance and zero double standards” approach during his State Visit to Brazil. Speaking after bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, PM Modi said the growing defence cooperation between the two nations reflects “deep mutual trust.”

“We strongly oppose both terrorism and those who support it. There is no place for double standards when it comes to terrorism,” PM Modi said at a joint press statement with President Lula.

He also thanked the Brazilian President for his condemnation of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 Indian citizens, and expressed appreciation for Brazil’s support and solidarity.

Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East) P. Kumaran stated that the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues including:

  • Defence and security
  • Food and nutritional security
  • Energy transition and climate change
  • Artificial intelligence and digital transformation
  • Trade, investments, and industrial partnerships

“Our collaboration in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and supercomputers is expanding. This reflects our shared vision for inclusive development and human-centric innovation,” PM Modi noted.

India and Brazil signed several important agreements, including:

  • An agreement on cooperation in combating international terrorism and transnational organised crime
  • MoUs on renewable energy and digital transformation

The two leaders met at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia, where PM Modi was accorded a warm ceremonial welcome. The visit was part of PM Modi’s broader diplomatic tour, which included participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro and high-level bilateral engagements.

PM Modi’s visit to Brazil marked a renewed push for stronger India-Brazil ties based on shared democratic values, strategic interests, and mutual respect.
