Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, has announced that he will not be running for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada in the upcoming race. The decision comes amidst a period of political transition following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s declaration to step down.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Champagne described the decision as challenging but driven by his dedication to the country.

“I won’t be seeking the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada in the upcoming race,” he wrote. “A difficult decision, but one I take with Canada at heart. Thanks to Canadians, colleagues, and organizers from across the country who share the vision of a proud, ambitious, and prosperous Canada.”

Champagne’s announcement follows a similar decision by Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, who also declined to enter the leadership race. Joly stated her focus would remain on addressing pressing international challenges, including economic pressures and tariff threats posed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he would resign as the leader of the Liberal Party and as Prime Minister once a new leader is chosen. Trudeau has asked the Liberal Party President to begin the search for a new candidate and advised the Governor General to prorogue Parliament until March 24, allowing for a fresh start under new leadership.

“I intend to resign as party leader and as Prime Minister after the party chooses the next leader. If I have to fight internal battles, I can’t be a good candidate,” Trudeau said in his statement.

The decision to step down comes after months of parliamentary paralysis, marking the longest session of a minority Parliament in Canadian history. Trudeau expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve but acknowledged the challenges of governing in the current political climate.

“We have worked tirelessly for this country. Canada is at a critical moment in the world. Despite our best efforts, Parliament has been paralyzed for months. Every bone in my body tells me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians and this country,” Trudeau said.

As the Liberal Party prepares for a leadership transition, attention now turns to the race for Trudeau’s successor and the future direction of the party during a pivotal moment for Canada.
