In a bold political move, Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Saturday announced the formation of a new political group—the American Party—vowing to “give Americans their freedom back.” The announcement comes amid Musk’s escalating feud with former U.S. President Donald Trump over a controversial spending bill.

Musk, who made the declaration on his social media platform X, sharply criticised the current U.S. political landscape, claiming that the country operates under a “one-party system” rather than a true democracy.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk posted, referring to a recent poll he conducted on X, where 65 percent of respondents supported the idea. “Today, the American Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” he added.

The move follows a heated fallout between Trump and his former advisor over the “Big Beautiful Bill”—a major spending package passed by Congress and signed by Trump on July 4th in a celebratory ceremony outside the White House. Musk has strongly opposed the bill, warning of its impact on the national deficit and criticising what he calls wasteful government spending.

In response, Musk pledged to back challengers to Republican lawmakers who supported the legislation, while vowing to defend figures like Representative Thomas Massie, who voted against the bill.

Although Musk has officially launched the American Party, political analysts note that he has yet to outline a detailed roadmap or policy platform for the new party’s future.

The announcement marks a significant new chapter in Musk’s evolving political activism, as he continues to position himself as a vocal critic of both mainstream political parties in the United States.
