External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday extended greetings to the people of North Macedonia on their Independence Day, congratulating his counterpart, Foreign Minister Timco Mucunski.

In a post on X, Jaishankar shared a past photo of his meeting with Mucunski and wrote, “Congratulations to FM Timco Mucunski, the Government and the people of the Republic of North Macedonia on their Independence Day.”

India and North Macedonia share long-standing ties rooted in history, democracy, and pluralism, with a special connection through Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje.

India was among 40 co-sponsors of the 1993 UNGA resolution for Macedonia’s admission as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1995, with the Indian Embassy in Bulgaria concurrently accredited to North Macedonia. The country opened its Embassy in New Delhi in 2008 and maintains Honorary Consuls in Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru.

The partnership has seen regular high-level engagements. In July 2023, Minister of State Meenakashi Lekhi visited North Macedonia, holding talks with senior leaders and officials. In August 2023, North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani visited India, meeting Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, EAM Jaishankar, and Deputy NSA Vikram Misri.

Over the years, both countries have signed multiple agreements and MoUs to strengthen cooperation across various sectors.
