In a gesture symbolizing warm diplomatic ties, United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy presented India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar with a Tottenham Hotspur number 1 jersey featuring Jaishankar’s name. The exchange took place during Jaishankar’s official visit to the UK, underscoring the friendly relations between the two nations.
Notably, Lammy is a Member of Parliament from Tottenham in north London, the hometown of the iconic Tottenham Hotspur football club. The personalized jersey was gifted to Jaishankar at the historic Chevening House, where Lammy hosted the Indian minister.
In a video shared on Instagram capturing moments from the visit, Lammy expressed his enthusiasm for the strengthening UK-India relationship. “It is a great privilege to have you here as my first guest. 2025 is going to be a special year for moving the UK-India relationship into a new era,” Lammy said.
Lammy also posted highlights of their discussions on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Thank you @DrSJaishankar, for being my first official guest at Chevening. We’re building a new era in relations, from FTA negotiations last week to discussions on growth, security, and foreign policy today. Our partnership makes our people safer and more prosperous,” he wrote.
During their meeting, Jaishankar and Lammy held wide-ranging talks covering the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, including strategic coordination, political cooperation, trade deal negotiations, education, technology, mobility, and people-to-people exchanges.
Jaishankar’s visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland, scheduled from March 4 to 9, aims to provide renewed impetus to India’s friendly ties with both countries. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that India and the UK share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has been strengthened across diverse sectors such as defence, security, trade, economy, health, education, and cultural exchange.
The exchange of the personalized Tottenham Hotspur jersey added a personal touch to the diplomatic engagement, symbolizing mutual respect and the growing camaraderie between the two nations.
