British political commentator and author David Vance has strongly criticised China for backing Pakistan in the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack and during India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor. In an interview with ANI, Vance accused Beijing of operating Pakistan as a “proxy” in the region and warned that China poses a significant threat to both India and the West.
“China operates Pakistan as a proxy in the region. So, China cannot be trusted in any regard, which is something I would have thought Donald Trump should have understood,” Vance said. “It would be far better if Trump realised that by supporting India, we are strengthening a bulwark against China.”
Vance argued that Western support for India is strategically vital, as China’s close relationship with Pakistan undermines regional stability and runs counter to both Indian and Western interests. “The more we can help India against Pakistan, the better. China’s vested interests with Pakistan don’t align with what’s best for India—or the West,” he added.
He also sharply criticised Turkey for backing Pakistan, describing Ankara as “problematic” and dismissing its anti-India rhetoric as expected. “Turkey is a very problematical state as well. So, it doesn’t surprise me that [President] Erdogan would be critical of India. I see him very much aligned with China. The anti-India rhetoric is just to be expected and should be dismissed accordingly,” Vance stated.
Expressing unequivocal support for India’s military response under Operation Sindoor, Vance called it “long overdue” and essential. “The operation was long overdue. It needed to happen. I think it’s been pretty successful,” he said. “This was India striking a blow for civilisation. It was more than just a conflict with Pakistan.”
Vance, who has previously labelled Pakistan a “terrorist state” and a “terrorist incubator,” reiterated those views, asserting that India’s decisive military action was justified.
India launched Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack last month, which claimed the lives of 26 people. On May 7, India conducted precision strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), reportedly killing over 100 terrorists. India also responded forcefully to Pakistani aggression that followed, targeting Pakistani airbases.
Vance’s remarks reflect growing international concern over China’s influence in South Asia and increasing global support for India’s firm stance against cross-border terrorism.
