Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday embarked on an official visit to Algeria, marking his first overseas tour since the success of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army said.

The visit aims to boost bilateral defence cooperation and advance strategic engagements between the two nations. In a post on X, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) stated, “General Upendra Dwivedi, COAS, proceeded on an official visit to Algeria today. The visit underscores a shared commitment to deepening mutual understanding, enhancing cooperation in areas of common interest, and advancing bilateral defence cooperation between the two nations.”

The Army said discussions are expected to focus on strengthening Army-to-Army ties, expanding training exchanges, and enhancing capability development initiatives. With Algeria operating largely similar military equipment, India is well placed to share operational expertise, provide training and maintenance support, and promote collaboration in defence technologies.

The two sides are also likely to explore opportunities for defence industrial partnerships in areas of modernisation, logistics, and equipment support. Gen Dwivedi will also outline India’s strategic stance of “zero tolerance for terrorism” while exchanging perspectives on regional and global security challenges.

The visit comes after recent high-level exchanges, including the tours of President Droupadi Murmu and Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan to Algiers, which set the stage for deeper cooperation.

Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, was a targeted campaign against terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and within Pakistan. Gen Dwivedi’s visit reflects the Indian Army’s growing role in advancing strategic and counterterrorism partnerships abroad.

Earlier in June, an all-party delegation led by BJP MP Baijayant Panda had also visited Algeria as part of India’s diplomatic outreach on Operation Sindoor.
