Ambedkar Jayanti Celebrated in New York as April 14 Officially Proclaimed ‘Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day’

People from diverse backgrounds came together in New York City to mark a historic moment as April 14 was officially proclaimed “Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day,” honouring the architect of India’s Constitution on his 134th birth anniversary.

Speaking to ANI, Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Innovation, highlighted the significance of the moment: “Today, it is such a historic moment. Not only in India, but 8.5 million residents of New York City are also celebrating Dr Ambedkar’s birthday.”

The celebrations, held at the United Nations Headquarters, brought together global leaders, diplomats, innovators, and community members. Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale attended the commemorative event, stating, “Many countries around the world, not just India, are honouring Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar today. The event reflects the global reach of his vision for social justice, equality, and inclusion.”

Deelip Mhaske, President of the Foundation for Human Horizon, emphasized the ongoing collaboration with the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, saying, “We work year-round with international institutions like the World Bank and WHO to promote Dr Ambedkar’s legacy in social justice and economic empowerment.”

He also noted the involvement of Buddhist nations such as Bhutan and Thailand, acknowledging Dr Ambedkar’s role in the revival of Buddhism in India and its influence on global peace initiatives.

Mhaske further shared details about upcoming events, including the ECOSOC Youth Forum, where discussions will focus on sustainable development, economic empowerment, and youth engagement through Ambedkar’s ideals.

Raj Brahmbhatt, Founder and CEO of Zeebu, highlighted the integration of technology in the celebrations. “We’re here to talk about empowering youth through blockchain and artificial intelligence, aligning our discussion with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Ambedkar’s vision for inclusive progress,” he said.

The recognition of April 14 as “Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day” by New York City marks a significant milestone in taking Ambedkar’s message of equality and justice to a global stage, uniting communities across borders in shared values of human dignity and social reform.
