Australian cricket star Steve Smith has officially announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket, ending a distinguished career in the format after 170 matches. Smith’s decision follows Australia’s four-wicket loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final in Dubai, marking his final ODI appearance. Although stepping away from ODIs, the 35-year-old will continue to represent Australia in Test and T20I cricket, with a focus on the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will feature in the T20 format.

Reflecting on his ODI journey, Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it.” He also mentioned that it was the right time to make way for the next generation, as Australia prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

During his ODI career, Smith amassed 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 fifties, with a career-best 164 against New Zealand in 2016. His leadership in 64 ODIs included guiding Australia to series victories and leading the team to World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023.

Smith’s decision to retire signals a transition for Australia’s ODI setup, as key players from the 2023 World Cup-winning squad are either stepping down or missing from the Champions Trophy semi-final. National Selection Panel chair George Bailey and Cricket Australia’s CEO Todd Greenberg both praised Smith’s immense contributions to Australian cricket, with Greenberg acknowledging his leadership and adaptability throughout his career.

As Australia rebuilds its ODI squad in preparation for the 2027 World Cup, Smith’s impact on the format will be remembered as one of the greats of Australian cricket.
