Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has heaped praise on the Shubman Gill-led Indian team after their emphatic 336-run win over England in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The victory, which marked India’s first-ever win at the venue, helped level the five-match series 1-1.
“It was a great win. Team India played very well. Shubman Gill was outstanding. So were Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the fast bowlers, and Ravindra Jadeja. It has been a fantastic team effort. So good to see youngsters stand up and win,” Ganguly told ANI.
He added, “The next Test is at Lord’s in two days. I wish them the best and hope they continue this winning momentum.”
India’s batting was led by captain Shubman Gill, who scored a marathon 269 in the first innings and followed it up with a rapid 161 in the second. Ravindra Jadeja supported with knocks of 89 and 69 respectively*, while Rishabh Pant’s quickfire 65 further strengthened India’s second innings.
On the bowling front, Akash Deep stole the show with a 10-wicket haul, including 6/99 in the second innings, while Mohammed Siraj contributed with 6/70 in England’s first innings.
Despite a valiant partnership of 303 runs between Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184)* in their first innings, England could not maintain momentum. India’s bowlers dismantled their second innings for just 271, sealing a comprehensive victory.
The win broke India’s seven-match winless streak at Edgbaston and gave them momentum heading into the third Test at Lord’s. With young talents firing on all fronts, the visitors are hopeful of carrying their form through the remainder of the series.
