Senior India batter Shreyas Iyer has decided to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to recurring back spasms and stiffness following his recovery from back surgery in the UK. The decision was communicated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), with Iyer aiming to focus on building endurance, body resilience, and overall fitness.

As a result, Iyer has not been considered for the Rest of India squad for the upcoming Irani Cup against Vidarbha. However, he will continue to captain the India A side in the three-match one-day series against Australia A, starting September 30 in Kanpur.

Iyer had struggled with consecutive low scores in recent red-ball matches, including a game against Australia A and the Duleep Trophy semi-final against Central Zone.

The Senior Men’s Selection Committee announced the squads for India A and Rest of India on Thursday. The Irani Cup, featuring Ranji Trophy 2024-25 champions Vidarbha against Rest of India, will be played in Nagpur from October 1.
