Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sharply criticized the Central government on Thursday regarding the deportation of over 100 Indian nationals who were allegedly living illegally in the United States. Expressing her discontent, she questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to the incident, particularly in light of his close relationship with US President Donald Trump.
In a video shared by the All India Congress Committee, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “It has been repeatedly said that President Trump and PM Modi are very good friends. Why did PM Modi let this happen?” She went on to question the way the deportation was carried out, emphasizing the need for a more humane approach. “Couldn’t we have sent our own aircraft to bring them back? Is this how humans are treated—sent back handcuffed and shackled? The External Affairs Minister and the Prime Minister must answer,” the Congress MP added.
Meanwhile, opposition parliamentarians staged a protest demanding a parliamentary discussion on the deportation issue. Congress MP from Amritsar, Gurujit Singh Aujla, participated in the protest while wearing handcuffs. Aujla expressed his concerns, stating, “The manner in which they were brought back was wrong. They were humiliated, with their hands and feet shackled. If the government knew they were going to be deported, they should have sent a commercial flight to bring them back.”
Other opposition leaders, including Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav, also wore handcuffs during the protest outside Parliament. They held placards reading “Humans, Not Prisoners” to highlight what they called the inhumane treatment of Indian citizens during their deportation from the US.
In a bid to address the matter, Congress submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, calling for a discussion on the deportation of Indian nationals from the US. The motion read, “This House must urgently address the issue to prevent further dehumanization of our people and to uphold the dignity of every Indian, both at home and abroad.”
The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm as a result of the ruckus over the issue.
