The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) organised a protest rally on Friday night, demanding justice for the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024, while on night duty.
The victim’s father, who arrived in Delhi on Wednesday, voiced his deep frustration over the investigation, alleging inaction and misconduct by both the CBI and Kolkata Police. He claimed the state’s Health Secretary was linked to the crime and demanded his immediate arrest.
“We have come to Delhi with hope, but it has been a year, and we are still wandering in search of justice,” he said. “We will try to meet the CBI Director tomorrow, and if possible, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, to press for a fair and efficient probe. The CBI and Kolkata Police have misled the public. Our fight is to ensure women’s safety in society, but in one year, the CBI has not uncovered the truth.”
He further alleged that such incidents are frequent in state institutions, recalling a similar case in a law college. Accusing the Bengal government of prioritising power over public safety, he said, “At least 30 to 40 people are involved in this case. Evidence was destroyed before our eyes, but the CBI has ignored it. The Health Secretary’s role must be investigated, and he should be arrested.”
The brutal crime triggered widespread protests nationwide. Dissatisfied with the police’s handling, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, which has since made multiple arrests. However, the victim’s family and many protesters continue to demand swifter, transparent justice.
