BJP leader Vijender Gupta is expected to be appointed as the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, while Mohan Singh Bisht is likely to be named as Deputy Speaker, sources say.
Gupta, who served as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, is an MLA from Rohini. He won the constituency with a significant margin of over 37,000 votes, defeating AAP’s Pradeep Mittal. Gupta has held several prominent positions, including president of Delhi BJP, a member of the Delhi Development Authority, and former chairman of the MCD’s standing committee.
On the other hand, BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht, who emerged victorious with a margin of over 17,000 votes, beat AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan. Bisht has been a five-time MLA, having represented the Karawal Nagar constituency. This victory marks his sixth term, this time from the Mustafabad constituency. Bisht has consistently won elections since 1998, with only one defeat in 2015 to BJP’s Kapil Mishra.
In the meantime, Rekha Gupta, the BJP MLA from Shalimar Bagh, will take the oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi today. Gupta, who has been an active member of the BJP Mahila Morcha and served on its national executive committee, has been instrumental in launching several initiatives for the welfare of marginalized communities and women. Speaking to ANI, she expressed that her rise to Chief Minister is a “miracle” and a new motivation for women in politics, saying, “If I can be the CM, this means ways are open for all women. Anyone who has been corrupt will have to give an account of every rupee.”
Alongside Gupta, six other ministers, including Parvesh Sahib Singh (Deputy CM), Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh, will also take the oath.
Gupta’s appointment will make her the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi, following women leaders from BJP, Congress, and AAP. The BJP is forming the government in Delhi after 27 years, having won 48 out of 70 seats in the recent assembly elections. AAP secured only 22 seats, while Congress failed to win any.
