The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed high drama and chaos on Monday as National Conference (NC) MLAs and their allies vocally protested against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, tearing up copies of the bill and raising slogans.

Tensions escalated after Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected an adjournment motion brought by NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq, citing that the matter was sub judice. “Since this issue is in the Supreme Court, rules do not permit discussion under an adjournment motion,” said the Speaker.

NC legislators stormed the well of the House, shouting slogans like “Ban karo Waqf bill ko”, as Marshalls attempted to block their movement. The Congress and PDP joined in the opposition, slamming the government for bypassing federal principles and accusing it of eroding democratic values.

Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone called the bill a “violation of the Constitution,” while PDP leader Waheed Para alleged a “fixed match” between the ruling party and the NC over the bill’s passage.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which recently received Presidential assent, aims to modernize and improve the administration of Waqf properties across the country. It repeals the Mussalman Wakf Act of 1923 and brings in tech-based reforms, streamlined registration, and enhanced governance for Waqf Boards.

Despite its intended reforms, the bill has triggered political controversy in J&K, with opposition parties accusing the government of sidelining community concerns and democratic process.
