Union Ministers Mansukh Mandaviya and Sanjay Seth paid heartfelt homage to the valiant Indian soldiers of the 1999 Kargil War during a commemorative event held in Drass, Kargil, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
In a symbolic gesture of national unity, the ministers participated in a padyatra alongside locals, students, and families of fallen soldiers. The march, filled with chants of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” reflected the collective pride and gratitude of the nation.
A cultural programme featuring students in traditional attire was held, with emotional performances including the patriotic song “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon” moving many to tears. Family members of war heroes laid floral tributes at the Kargil War Memorial, pausing to remember their loved ones beside engraved names of the martyrs.
Speaking at the event, Union MoS for Defence Sanjay Seth lauded the military’s growing strength and India’s strides in indigenous defence production: “Whether it’s surgical strikes, airstrikes or Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army is second to none. Today, we are exporting defence equipment to nearly 92 countries. Our goal is ₹50,000 crore in exports by 2029. Under PM Modi’s vision, India is 75% self-reliant in defence.”
The Kargil War, which began in May 1999, was triggered by Pakistani intrusions across the Line of Control. In response, India launched Operation Vijay, a grueling two-month campaign to reclaim high-altitude positions under enemy fire. Victory was declared on July 26, a day now marked as Kargil Vijay Diwas to honour the bravery and sacrifice of India’s armed forces.
The event at Drass served not only as a tribute but also a reminder of the indomitable spirit of the soldiers who fought to protect the nation’s sovereignty.
