Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 118th episode of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, described the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj as an “extraordinary confluence of equality and harmony,” highlighting its significance as a global event. He praised the festival’s spirit of unity and diversity, calling it a tradition where people from all walks of life gather without any discrimination.
“The Maha Kumbh has begun in Prayagraj. Unforgettable crowd, unimaginable scenes, and extraordinary confluence of equality and harmony… This festival celebrates unity in diversity. People from all over India and the world come together on the sands of Sangam. There is no discrimination or casteism in this thousands-of-years-old tradition. Everyone takes a dip in the Sangam, shares a community feast, and accepts Prasad together. That is why Kumbh is the Maha Kumbh of unity,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi noted the parallels between the Maha Kumbh in northern India and Pushkaram, a similar festival celebrated in southern India along rivers such as the Narmada, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri. He emphasized that these festivals reflect India’s shared cultural and spiritual heritage, binding the nation together.
“The organisation of Kumbh tells us how our traditions unite the entire country. In the north, Kumbh is celebrated in Prayagraj, Ujjain, Nashik, and Haridwar. Similarly, in the south, Pushkaram is celebrated on rivers like the Narmada and Godavari. Both festivals celebrate our belief in and reverence for our holy rivers,” he said, mentioning the sacred temples associated with these traditions, from Kumbakonam to Thirukadaiyur.
PM Modi expressed pride in the growing participation of young people in the Maha Kumbh and its increasing digital presence. “When the youth engage with traditions, it ensures a bright future. This year, we are witnessing a significant number of young participants and a large-scale digital footprint in Kumbh, which is a proud moment for all Indians,” he said.
Reflecting on the recent Gangasagar Mela in West Bengal, held during Makar Sankranti, PM Modi highlighted the large turnout of devotees. “Festivals like Kumbh, Pushkaram, and Gangasagar Mela promote social interaction, harmony, and unity. They connect people to India’s rich traditions and strengthen the spiritual, cultural, and economic fabric of society,” he said.
PM Modi also mentioned the first anniversary of the consecration of Ram Lala in Ayodhya, celebrated on January 11. “On Paush Shukla Dwadashi, lakhs of devotees took blessings of Lord Ram. This day has now become Prathistha Dwadashi Day. As we progress on the path of development, we must also preserve and draw inspiration from our heritage,” he added.
Mann Ki Baat is PM Modi’s monthly radio programme that connects him directly with the citizens of India to discuss important issues. Launched on October 3, 2014, it is broadcast in 22 Indian languages, 29 dialects, and 11 foreign languages, reaching over 500 All India Radio centres globally.
This month’s episode was aired on the third Sunday instead of the usual last Sunday due to Republic Day celebrations. PM Modi emphasized how the programme serves as a platform to promote India’s traditions, culture, and development initiatives, fostering a connection with various segments of society, including women, the elderly, and youth.
