Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, highlighted the Indian diaspora’s invaluable role in preserving and promoting India’s culture and values globally. He emphasized how their presence during festive times strengthens their connection to India and enriches the nation’s spirit.

“Your presence in India at such a wonderful time is adding to the festive spirit,” PM Modi remarked, referring to the ongoing celebrations like the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj and upcoming festivals such as Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu. He also recalled the historic day in 1915 when Mahatma Gandhi returned to India, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter in the nation’s history.

PM Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare and safety of the diaspora, stating, “Your safety and welfare are our top priority. We consider it our responsibility to help our diaspora during crisis situations, no matter where they are.” He highlighted proactive measures by Indian embassies worldwide and improvements in consular services, including the establishment of 14 new embassies and consulates in the last two years. Additionally, he mentioned the expanded scope of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, now available to the seventh-generation Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) from Mauritius.

PM Modi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose vision laid the foundation for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. “This program has become an institution to strengthen the bond between India and its diaspora. Together we celebrate India, Indianness, our culture, our progress, and our roots,” he said.

Highlighting Odisha’s rich cultural legacy, PM Modi mentioned iconic sites like Udaygiri, Konark, and Tamralipti, as well as the ancient maritime connections between Odisha and regions like Bali, Sumatra, and Java. Drawing on the teachings of King Ashoka, who chose peace over war, the Prime Minister emphasized, “It is because of our heritage that India can tell the world that the future lies in wisdom, not warfare.”

Referring to the diaspora as “Rashtradoot” (ambassadors of the nation), PM Modi expressed his gratitude for their contributions to enhancing India’s global reputation. He praised their ability to integrate into foreign societies while upholding Indian values, saying, “You connect with the society, respect rules and traditions, serve the countries honestly, contribute to their growth and prosperity, and still have India beating in your hearts.”

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, the Government of India’s flagship event, aims to strengthen ties with the Indian diaspora. Organized in partnership with the Odisha state government, the 18th PBD Convention, held from January 8 to 10, celebrates the theme, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat.” Participants from over 50 countries are attending this year’s event to engage with India’s progress and explore collaborative opportunities.

PM Modi’s address underscored the importance of the diaspora in India’s journey toward becoming a global powerhouse while preserving its cultural essence.
