After the ‘Nabanna Abhiyaan’ rally turned violent in Kolkata, Union Minister and BJP national president JP Nadda attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that the TMC chief has crossed all limits of “cruelty and dictatorship” in Bengal.
“The violence and repression witnessed on the streets of West Bengal today by Mamata Banerjee’s government and her brutal police against the doctors, youth and women of Bengal who were demanding justice, is not only condemnable but also shameful for humanity. In West Bengal, a daughter is brutally raped but Mamata Banerjee is silent. The dignity of a woman is torn to shreds, the parents of the daughter are misled and Mamata Banerjee is silent.
When the youth power of the country tried to raise their voice against the new justice by launching the ‘Nabanna Abhiyaan’, then Mamata Banerjee realised her position as the Chief Minister and crossed all limits of cruelty to save the culprits. The government deployed more than 6,000 police personnel, Howrah Bridge was sealed, the students were lathi-charged on the streets of Bengal, and they were attacked with water cannons…Despite being a woman Chief Minister, Mamata ji has completely failed to ensure the safety of the women of Bengal,” Nadda said on Tuesday.
Nadda further said that the BJP has called for a Bengal bandh for 12 hours from 6 am on Wednesday.
“Keeping in mind the sentiments of the common citizens, the Bharatiya Janata Party has called for a Bengal bandh for 12 hours from 6 am on Wednesday. I am confident that the people of Bengal will stand with us and will leave no stone unturned to shatter the pride of Mamata Banerjee and create an environment to overthrow such an oppressive government,” he added.
The BJP chief further said that the West Bengal Chief Minister crossed all limits of cruelty and dictatorship in Bengal.
“Mamata ji has crossed all limits of cruelty and dictatorship in Bengal. Be it the brutal murder of a BJP worker, the collusion of the government and administration to save the culprits of the cases in Sandeshkhali and RG Kar Medical College. The dictatorial attitude of the dictatorial Chief Minister of Bengal is visible in all the cases. Mamata Banerjee is trying to save such criminals. What is the compulsion in this? Why are you trying to save them? Here the protector has become the predator. Thousands of demonstrations and protests are going on in the streets of Kolkata and the entire West Bengal is against Mamata Banerjee’s government, where common people have come out of their homes against Mamata Banerjee,” he added.
The father of the deceased of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case said that he is standing in support of the students who are protesting for my daughter.
“I am standing in support of the students who are protesting for my daughter. I am very proud that the students have taken such a risk and are out today for my daughter. They should intensify their protest and should keep demanding justice,” he added.
On Tuesday, a protest march to West Bengal Secretariat ‘Nabanna’ was organised by the ‘Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj’ and other organisations, which aimed to protest the recent rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata.
The rally termed “Nabanna Abhiyan” started from the College Square in the capital of West Bengal, amid heightened security around the West Bengal state secretariat with protestors gathering at the Santragachi area in Howrah.
Later, the police hosed protestors with water cannons as they climbed atop police barricades, clashed with police personnel and broke the barricades at Santragachi in Howrah during the protest march.
Protestors also dragged away police barricades and police resorted to opening lathi-charge and lobbying tear gas shells to disperse them.
Following the chaos, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) TMC listed “BJP’s idea of a ‘peaceful protest’,” in a social media post in X, which includes stone pelting, pushing barricades, severely injuring the police, orchestrating extreme chaos and disrupting the law and order of the state.
TMC further stated that the “Nabanna Abhiyan” was a conspiracy by the BJP and was “nothing short of a FATAL ATTACK on Bengal!”
All these came following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital premises, which sparked nationwide outrage and since then several protests have been staged demanding justice for the victim. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall on August 9.
