Following recent violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has alleged that over 400 Hindus were “forced to flee” their homes due to religious persecution. The unrest follows protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, during which three people were killed, several vehicles torched, and tensions escalated in the region.

In a post on X, Adhikari claimed that families from Dhulian, Murshidabad fled across the river out of fear and are currently taking shelter at Par Lalpur High School in Malda’s Baisnabnagar area. “More than 400 Hindus from Dhulian, Murshidabad driven by fear of religiously driven bigots were forced to flee,” he wrote, blaming Trinamool Congress (TMC) for “appeasement politics” that, he says, have emboldened radical elements.

Adhikari shared videos and images allegedly showing displaced families. In one clip, a resident claimed his home had been set on fire and accused the police of fleeing instead of offering help.

Urging immediate action, Adhikari called on the Border Security Force (BSF), state police, and district administration to ensure the safe return of displaced residents. “Bengal is burning. The social fabric is torn. Enough is enough,” he said, asserting that Hindus are “being hunted in their own land.”

In response to the violence, five BSF companies were deployed to assist local police, following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. IG South Bengal Frontier Karni Singh Shekhawat confirmed the BSF is cooperating fully with the state police to restore order.

The Calcutta High Court has asked both the West Bengal government and the Centre to submit detailed reports on the incident, with the next hearing scheduled for April 17.

While authorities claim the situation is now under control, the violence has reignited debate over religious tensions, political accountability, and the law and order situation in West Bengal.
